Our Strategic Alliances
Active alliances include our broad co-development and co-marketing collaboration with Purdue Pharmaceutical Products L.P. and Mundipharma International Corporation Ltd., as well as our collaboration with Intellikine, Inc. for the development of novel inhibitors of the delta and gamma isoforms of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and with the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research for the development of small molecules targeting the Bcl-2 family of proteins.
In 2008, we entered into a strategic alliance with Purdue and Mundipharma that enables us to aggressively pursue its goal of developing and commercializing a pipeline of innovative product candidates for multiple diseases. The alliance includes product candidates arising from Infinity's Hedgehog pathway, PI3K and all discovery programs. Mundipharma is obligated to fund all research and development costs of these programs within the strategic alliance through at least 2013, up to caps of $85 million in 2011 and $110 million in 2012. We retain U.S. commercialization rights for these products and are entitled to receive royalties of up to 20 percent on any product sales outside the U.S.
In 2010, after we discovered and successfully completed a Phase 1 trial of IPI-940, a fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor, Purdue and Mundipharma exercised global rights to develop and commercialize activities for this program. Purdue expects to begin Phase 2 studies of IPI-940 in pain. Under the terms of the alliance related to our FAAH program, Purdue and Mundipharma are responsible for fully funding the FAAH program and we are entitled to worldwide royalties of up to 20% on any successfully-developed products.
We partner with some of the most innovative pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, inabling us to develop more product candidates than we could advance on our own. Our license and collaboration agreement with Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company (as successor to Intellikine, Inc.) allowed us to obtain global development and commercialization rights to a portfolio of inhibitors of the delta and gamma isoforms of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K). The first candidate under this agreement is IPI-145, a potent oral inhibitor of PI3K-delta and gamma, currently in Phase 1 development in hematologic cancers and in healthy adult subjects to support clinical development in inflammation. We are also working to identify additional differentiated inhibitors of the delta and/or gamma isoforms of PI3K for inflammation and oncology.
The PI3K program is part of Infinity's broad alliance with Mundipharma International Corporation Ltd. and is funded by Mundipharma in the same manner as Infinity's internally-discovered programs.
Infinity has a long history of academic collaborations, and we are proud of the rich body of research we have generated with our clinical and scientific partners.
